Compress to an Exact File Size

Need an image under 100 KB for a form, or exactly under 1 MB for an upload limit? Set the target — the tool searches the best quality that fits, automatically. It tries full resolution first, then intelligently steps down if needed, and reports exactly what it did. All in your browser, no uploads.

Drop your target file size files here or click to browse

You can also paste from the clipboard (Ctrl+V)

Target size replaces quality; format selector included.

🔒 100% private: your files are processed by your own browser and never leave your device.

How it works

  1. Drop your image(s) onto the box (JPG, PNG or WebP).
  2. Type the target size in KB — 100, 200, 500, 1000 — and pick JPG or WebP output.
  3. Press Convert. A binary search over quality finds the best setting under your limit.
  4. Check the result size in each row, then download. If the target was unreachable at full size, dimensions were reduced — the note tells you.

Features

Smart quality search

Around nine encoded attempts per image triangulate the highest quality that still fits your limit.

Resolution fallback

If even the lowest quality is too heavy, dimensions are reduced step by step — you see the final size in the note.

JPG or WebP output

WebP usually fits targets with less quality loss; JPG is the safest universal choice.

Real-world presets

100 KB for job portals, 200 KB for forums, 500 KB for marketplaces, 1 MB for strict CMS — or type your own.

Batch friendly

Push several images to the same target in one run — every file gets its own optimal settings.

Supported formats. Accepts .jpg, .png, .webp (HEIC too, via automatic decode). Outputs .jpg (white background) or .webp. Extreme targets (e.g. 20 KB from a 4000-pixel photo) will reduce dimensions noticeably.

Common use cases

Limitations (honest ones)

Compression to a fixed size is lossy by nature — a 50 KB photo from a 12 MP camera will be visibly softer, and the tool prefers reducing quality before reducing dimensions only when quality alone cannot fit. The achieved size may sit slightly under the target (never over). Transparent images become white-background JPGs unless WebP is chosen.

Frequently asked questions

Why not just use maximum compression?

Over-compressed images look broken. The quality search keeps the file as close to the target as possible while spending your size budget where the eye notices it least.

My image ended smaller than the target — why?

The search snaps to quality steps; getting within ~6% of the target is the sweet spot between speed and precision. Slightly under is safer than over for upload checks.

What if it can't reach 20 KB from a huge photo?

It will reduce dimensions progressively until it fits — the note shows the final resolution. For extreme targets, crop or resize first, then compress.

Is the target guaranteed for upload forms?

The output is never larger than requested (within 6% tolerance near the target). If a portal is strict, set your target 10% below its limit.
