Password-Protect a PDF in Your Browser

Add real password protection to a PDF without uploading it anywhere. Choose a password, optionally restrict printing, copying or editing — and download an encrypted file that asks for the password in every PDF reader: Acrobat, Preview, browsers and phones. Because the encryption runs in JavaScript on your device, even your password stays private.

Drop your PDF here or click to browse

You can also paste from the clipboard (Ctrl+V)

Use a long passphrase (12+ characters). Nothing is stored anywhere.

🔒 100% private: your files are processed by your own browser and never leave your device.

How it works

  1. Drop your PDF into the box above.
  2. Enter a password (and repeat it to confirm). Tip: a long passphrase beats a short complicated one.
  3. Press Protect PDF. Your browser encrypts the document with the standard PDF security handler.
  4. Download the protected file — anyone opening it will need your password.

Features

Real encryption, real password prompt

The output uses the PDF standard security handler, so every serious reader asks for the password before showing a single page.

Owner & user passwords

Set one password for readers, and (optionally) a separate owner password for full access — or leave both the same.

Permission flags

Decide whether readers may print, copy text or modify the document — restrictions apply in compliant readers.

Batch protection

Queue several PDFs and protect them all with the same password in one run.

Private by architecture

Files and passwords are processed on your device only. There is no server to trust, because there is no server involved.

Supported formats. Accepts any unencrypted .pdf. Outputs a password-protected .pdf (standard PDF encryption, readable by Acrobat, Preview, Chrome, Edge, Firefox and mobile readers).

Common use cases

Limitations (honest ones)

Be honest about what PDF passwords do: encryption blocks opening, but permission flags (no printing / no copying) are enforced by readers, not by cryptography — a determined user with tools can strip them. A forgotten password cannot be recovered. This tool cannot remove existing encryption from a PDF. For sensitive material, also use secure channels (encrypted email, expiring links).

Frequently asked questions

How strong is PDF password protection?

Opening the file requires the password — modern readers use strong key-derivation, so brute-forcing a long passphrase is impractical. But permission flags like “no printing” are honor-system rules enforced by the reader, not absolute walls.

I forgot my password. Can you recover it?

No. There is no backdoor and this tool stores nothing — which is the point. Keep passwords in a password manager.

Can I remove a password from a PDF later?

Yes — open it in the tool or reader that created it, enter the password and re-save without one. This tool itself only adds protection.

Does this stop screenshots or copying by specialized tools?

No software can stop a photograph of a screen. PDF protection raises the bar for casual sharing; treat it as one layer, not the only one.

Will the protected file open on phones?

Yes — iOS and Android PDF viewers all support the standard password prompt for this kind of encryption.
